I feel that I want to play Terraforming Mars more than I do Gaia Project, mostly because it plays in a shorter amount of time (for us) than GP and its easier to understand with new groups of people. Honestly even after considering all these points its a wash. In addition, both games are begging for inserts to help organize them, which obviously adds to the cost. However TfM has 2 expansions (with at least 2 more coming) which will add to the cost. Is price an issue? TfM is much cheaper than GP at the moment (~$50 for TfM, ~$85 for GP). GP is almost theme-less as its focus is almost completely on its mechanisms. How thematic does your group want your games to be? TfM's end game mechanics are much more thematic than GP.
